BLEPHAROPLASTY

BLEPHAROPLASTY

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common aesthetic plastic surgeries. Perhaps this is because the eyes, together with the mouth, are one of the first things one looks at when looking at a face. The most common question we hear is “Doctor, can you do something about my tired look?” This is usually accompanied by the worried question of “Doctor, will my look change?” In other words: “Please make me look more youthful, but not any different”.

Blepharoplasty is also one of the procedures that Tonnard and Verpaele perform the most. Although it might seem like a simple procedure, it requires in-depth knowledge of aesthetics, anatomy and surgical techniques. Old, classic techniques that were common practice until a decade ago often resulted in a muted or expressionless look, changing the shape of the eyes or making it too tight, giving the patient a hollowed-out appearance or making it impossible to fully close the eyes, etcetera.

Modern blepharoplasties serve two main purposes: restoring the tightness of the skin and restoring the volume around the eyes. After all, a large aspect of aging is the loss of subcutaneous fat. As a result, we almost always combine the removal of the sagging skin with the refilling of the hollows around the eyes. Tonnard and Verpaele use lipofilling for this, i.e. the body’s own fat, which is a safe and permanent solution to the problem. It is also increasingly uncommon to remove any skin from the lower eyelid (see link “Augmentation Blepharoplasty”).

This modern blepharoplasty offers many benefits: the techniques are less invasive and therefore safer, the recovery period is shorter, the harmful side-effects are less common and, above all, the results look far more natural. That is why we ask you to bring along some pictures of what you looked like at the age of 20-35. This will allow us to see what has changed since and what we have to do to restore your youthful appearance.
